Our English Program

The English Program provides free after-school classes in safe environments close to students' homes, led by experienced educators.

Associação Beneficente Sol de Maria (soldemariaofc@gmail.com) Penha Circular, since February 2026 - 2 classes, 32 kids and teens. The children attend the public school system in the morning and spend the afternoon in this safe after-school program where they also learn arts and receive tutoring.

Program FAQ

How were these children selected to participate in this program?

The children are part of the local community in the low-income neighborhoods where our program is located.

What level of English are you teaching?

New classes start with basic-level English. Then, we advance carefully introducing new materials to keep the students engaged and learning. Please review our periodic reports for additional details

Are classes organized by age or by level?

Classes are organized by age and demand. Our KIDS class has children from 9-11 years old and the TEENS class has children from 12-17 years old. Both classes are intended to provide the basic foundation for all our children to start learning the English language.

What is the time commitment for the students?

Classes are held twice a week, for 1 hour each session.

What is the teaching methodology used?

We have adopted the CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) methodology. Through CLIL, students not only learn a second language but also learn about new academic, social, and economic subjects.

What books will be used?

The class for kids, 9-11 years old, uses the "Student's Book With Online Practice + Student's Ebook - American English." from the "Imagine" series by National Geographic. The class for teens, 12-17 years old, we use the "Student's Book With Online Practice + Student's Ebook - American English." from the "Time Zones" series also by National Geographic.

Are the teachers volunteers or educators?

Teachers are professional educators with vast experience teaching English at private English schools in the cities where our program is located.

What type of expenses do my monthly donations as Sponsor help pay for?

Donations support the entire English program, including teacher compensation, equipment, facilities costs and maintenance, books, and other learning materials.

May I visit one of the classes?

Yes. If you are in town, please contact the project directly by email to make arrangements for a visit.

What happens at the end of the year?

Students who successfully complete all requirements receive a certificate of completion and may advance to the next level in the following year.
